June 16, 1976 South African students peacefully protested a law passed by the apartheid government that made the Afrikaans language the medium of instruction in schools, which hindered their ability to learn. As they protested, soldiers opened fire on students leading to the loss of many lives. The youth in this tragic incident were acting on what they believed in, and they paid a heavy price for it. Their sacrifice is remembered as a turning point in the apartheid struggle.
