Patrice Lumumba led his country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), from the tragedies of Belgian imperialism towards independence. The first elected prime minister, he was assassinated on 17 January 1961 by the United States and Belgium. He was steadfast in his beliefs in the Congolese people and sacrificed his life to achieve them. “The day will come when history will speak. But it will not be the history which will be taught in Brussels, Paris, Washington or the United Nations…Africa will write its own history and in both north and south it will be a history of glory and dignity” - Patrice Lumumba.
